TEST DRIVE
ink and digital, 2013
A couple pages of a script I’ve been writing. It’s about weird families, violence, commercial freight, more violence, and trying to uphold healthy, functioning relationships with psychopaths. The closest I’ve ever been able to describe it as is if the cutesy, expressive aesthetic of Pokemon was locked alone in a room with the unflinching black-humor sensibility of The Devil’s Rejects.
This story isn’t all written yet— it’s actually absurdly long— but if it were, these would be pages 8, 9, 10, and 11.

SWEET PRINCESS
ink and digital, 2013
Mockup title illustration for this article. There’s nothing wrong with liking pink and frilly things (I know I do), but when the Disney Princess culture encourages one-size-fits-all-girls personality traits like materialism and passivity, some parents try to give their kids more options. But it’s not that easy, apparently.

Some colored sketches I’ve done recently.
A couple of them are me as monsters… I’ve never considered manticores to be especially mentally sound.

Sparkledog: the (often derisive) term for a phenomenon that manifests when playing with Barbies gets old. Artistic, animal-loving girls ages 11-18 develop a canine persona, usually some kind of impossibly-colored domestic wolf. Then they deck it out with accessories: A mix of elements from a personal wishlist and their own wardrobe.
Also, one of my favorite internet curiosities. Anyone who makes fun of sparkledog artists is, in addition to shooting 8 pounds of dead fish in a bone-dry barrel? A heartless, fun-hating asshat.

The old “beauty and the beast” trope has been gaining a lot of traction with my peers, and I can see why— It’s really fun to mix and match.
#1, Minotaur husband.
Expect more of these.

ALAN.
digital, 2012.
A character design exercise with my most recurring character. Al is a theatrical guy and possesses a wide range of expression… but some of these he would sooner die than make in public.
